IP Ratings – What you should know Outdoor lighting is given and IP rating which stands for ‘ingress protection’ and this rating refers to the level of sealing around the electricals and therefor how hardwearing the light is. Higher IP ratings mean that the product will be more resistant to water, dirt and the elements and so it is a good idea to check this when you are selecting your products. The IP rating is usually a two digit number, the first number indicates the level of protection from solid objects while the second refers to protection from moisture. The table below explains the levels of protection in full: First Number 0 No special protection 1 Protected against solid objects over 50 mm, e.g. accidental touch by persons hands. 2 Protected against solid objects over 12 mm, e.g. fingers. 3 Protected against solid objects over 2.5 mm (tools and wires). 4 Protected against solid objects over 1 mm (tools and small wires). 5 Protected against dust limited ingress. 6 Totally protected against dust. Second Number 0 No protection. 1 Protection against vertically dripping water e.g. condensation. 2 Protection against direct vertical sprays of water up to 15o. 3 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 60o from the vertical. 4 Protection against water sprayed from all directions – limited ingress permitted. 5 Protected against low pressure jets of water from all directions – limited ingress. 6 Protected against temporary immersion. 7 Protected against the effect of immersion between 15 cm and 1 m. 8 Protects against long periods of immersion under pressure. *Remember to ensure that any outdoor lighting is installed correctly and safely using the correct materials. Always follow instructions carefully and, if in doubt, seek professional advice. Remember to check that the lighting you choose is suitable for the purpose you intend it for. Check the IP rating of your chosen piece for details.
