Designer

Over 6 generations Emile Henry has become a world renowned company. Started in 1850 Jacques Henry began his own pottery workshop in Marcigny using clay from surrounding areas to produce varied items such as jugs, dishes & flower pots. In 1882 Paul took over the company and moved to Paris to develop the customer base and was able to invest in a steam machine which was a symbol of power and independence. Emile Henry born 1885 took over as Managing Director in 1922 after returning from the war and struggled to keep the company going through difficult times. Competition from metallic containers became stronger, and many French potteries went out of business. Maurice then took over management in 1950 and production grew from 1000 to 5000 tons over 15 years. Modern kilns reduced the firing time and it was the beginning of exports to Great Britian, Denmark and Australia. From there Jacques took over in 1983 and his first priority was to improve the strength and resistance of the dishes. He created a laboratory specializing in research and development. In 1986 Ceradon was born & differentiate from low cost products, he created the Emile Henry brand name. In 2005 after 5 years of research Flame was launched to the market. It was the first ceramic that could be used directly on a gas or electric stove top or hob.
